Ways to Help
Help someone who is homeless or at-risk of becoming unhoused:
- Call 211 or visit www.211info.org to be connected to a wide variety of resources, including crisis hotlines, housing and shelter support, utility and food assistance, health and employment resources
- Visit our local housing authority’s resources page for affordable housing and/or community resource lists at www.homesforgood.org/find-a-home/resources
- The City of Eugene maintains a list of resources for people looking for an affordable home: www.eugene-or.gov/4050/Looking-for-an-Affordable-Home
- To see what shelter is currently available, visit www.lanecountyor.gov/shelter
Help someone who is having a mental health crisis:
- Call Lane County’s Mobile Crisis Response at 988 or 541-682-1001 for free and confidential mental health support (note: if you are witnessing an emergency or a crime in progress, general emergencies should still call 911)
Help keep our community clean:
- For Downtown Eugene (from High Street to Lawrence Street, and 6th Avenue to 11th Avenue), you can report issues of cleanliness, graffiti, or bio-hazard to the City of Eugene’s Rapid Response Clean Team: www.eugene-or.gov/downtownwatch
- On public property outside of downtown, you can submit a request to Public Works for certain types of maintenance: https://eugene-or.gov/1776/Maintenance-Service-Request; private property owners can hire services such as NorthWest HazMat for general waste/debris (nwhazmat.com, 800-597-1323) or New Look Cleaning for graffiti removal (541-912-3282)
Help with responding to someone on private property without permission:
- Deterrence: Post “no trespassing” signs on your property. Businesses and commercial properties should also file a Trespass Letter of Consent with Eugene Police to allow officers to take action: eugene-or.gov/2027/Trespass-Letter-of-Consent
- For other prevention advice, safety resources, and/or de-escalation training, contact the Eugene Police Community Engagement Team: eugene-or.gov/944/Community-Engagement-Team (brief videos to hear more about safety training/resources and property tips)
- If someone is actively on private property without permission, if possible, communicate clearly to the person they are trespassing and that you need them to vacate the premises. If the trespasser refuses to leave, call Eugene Police: 541-682-5111 (non-emergency) or 911 (if violent/emergency). Response times vary greatly.
- For Downtown Eugene, Downtown Guides (a.k.a. Red Hats) are available to businesses who need assistance with welfare checks, escorting to vehicles, reporting trespass, or general information (541-501-9286 from Monday – Friday, 8am – 6pm)
- To report unsanctioned camping/parking: https://eugene-or.gov/4902/Report-Concerns
- To report illegal incidents: https://ceapps.eugene-or.gov/epdcoplogic/
